In regards to my Geckos: The geckos I have are called crested geckos (Also called New Caledonian Crested Geckos, and Eyelash Crested Geckos, ect.) they originate from the island of New Caledonia which is part of the island group that makes up the sunken continent of Zealandia (which was once connected to the continent of Australia and includes New Zealand and Vanuatu.) New Caledonia is a temperate climate, meaning crested geckos are perfectly comfortable at room temperature. They do not need and external heating source such as a heat lamp like most reptiles require. In fact heat can me more detrimental to them than cold. They should never be allowed to be in heat over 83 degrees. It can cause stress or even death.
R. Ciliatus belong to the genus Rhacodactylus which also includes: R. Aurticulatus, R. Chahous, R. Leachianus, R. Sarasinorum, and R. trychtrynchus. This is a group of medium sized geckos that have prehensile tails which act as a second limb, and well developed lamellae to assist in climbing. They are as a whole arboreal geckos.
Now for the fun stuff. Cresties (as they are called) come in a multitude of colors anywhere from a dull buskin, to bright sunshine yellow, to an eye popping red or Orange. They also have distinctive markings. Some have dalmatian spots (generally in black or red.), others have markings down they dorsals which are referred to as flames, or even no markings at all. Here are a couple color guides: [link] and [link] It must also be noted that this group of geckos changes colors. They generally go from a duller day color and "Fire up" at night to a much more intense color.
Diet wise in the wild this group of geckos are fruigiverous. The staple of their diets is rotting fruits with the occasional insect. They have softer jaws than a strictly carnivorous geckos so they are unable to digest bugs with overly tough exoskeletons. In captivity most of us feed them Crested Gecko Diet, as it contains all of the nutrients that they require.
that's very interesting, thanks for posting all of this for us to read! One silly question though, if they change colors depending on the time of the day, do you take your picks during the day or the night?

We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on.
